it's a heating unit that stays outside, why the fuck is it not working with ice on it

(it's a window unit in this room)

I'm not handy enough to do a jury rig :3

it's 50 degrees and if I turn it on it just spits out cold air which never warms up

thank you for sharing in my grief

I don't understand what is going on

when I put it on the heat option and like medium fan speed, the fan never comes out and it's still steadily blowing out cold air

when I put the Cool option on, the fan instantly goes up to Medium where it should be

normally it shouldn't even think about coming out (the cool option) since it's god damn 20 degrees below what I would keep the AC on normally

normally

If it's a heat pump, they don't work well at all when it gets very cold outside, and they rely on emergency heat strips to reach set points.

If the coils are frozen, the compressor won't be able to warm air to send inside. Does it have visible ice on the outside? If so, a temporary fix might be to run the A/C for like 30 minutes to defrost it and then see if it will produce any hot air. You need to call up an HVAC repair company imo.

It's a heat pump. They don't really work when it gets super cold outside. They work by capturing heat energy from the outdoor air and transferring it ("pumping") it inside. When it's cold out, there's not much energy available to capture and pump inside.

Actually, peeing on it or even just running water over the outdoor coil will make it heat much better. The problem is it can cause scale to build up on the coil over time and it will probably also kill the fan.

A good option for supplemental heat in a smallish space is one of those cheap Chinese diesel parking heaters that's a knock-off of the Webasto heaters. I snagged one for $50 off FB marketplace for heating my shop. I put a piece of plywood in a window and ran the exhaust through it with a thru-hull fitting. They're intended for automotive applications, so they usually don't come with a 120v AC adapter, but it's easy enough to rig up a 12v DC power supply and they have some now that are coming with AC adapters.

It is relatively fuel efficient and doesn't put all the water vapor from combustion in the room like a propane heater. Way cheaper than supplementing with electric space heaters. I bring the shop up to temp first thing with a big diesel torpedo heater and then hold it there with the little Chinese unit.

I fucking hate heat pumps.

'preciate the advice though. I'm considering just replacing the entire unit though. it's had this steady rattle for years now. I feel like every time it's been serviced, they didn't address any of the issues. like it randomly shoots out black stuff? I'm completely useless when it comes to that

as for the part I quoted, I remember when it iced over (during snow) last year, I tried pouring water on it. I'm not sure if it helped. should I just try more of it next time? and is there any particular place I want to be pouring the water?

yeah I'm a 4 year old 43 year old who doesn't understand anything about household appliances, what of it?!

I don't know, but I would think it wouldn't be a great idea to pour water on it when it's in the teens/low-twenties outside.

Dude, don't actually pour water on it. It'll give it a warmer heat source and improve performance briefly, but it'll wreck it.

If you have a pet, place them on top of your heat pump unit outside. Their body heat will thaw out the unit and increase the ambient air temp at the same time (keeping your pet warm)
