Quote :
"Josh Schertz, Saint Louis coach: Schertz is probably the most notable name on the list, but it could be tough to land him. Sources told CBS Sports' Matt Norlander his recently signed deal at SLU is likely beyond what NC State could pay, and SLU's NIL is probably also going to be higher than what NC State can do. He's a wish list candidate, but almost certainly not attainable."

Matt Norlander thinks we can't even compete with SLU on Schertz's salary or NIL.

This is one of those times where not having a football team is an advantage. While their total revenue will obviously be smaller, they don't have to pay a massive football staff and a large roster of players. So it wouldn't surprise me if basketball gets a larger total $ amount of revenue sharing as well as the school having the ability to pay more for a coaching staff.

Yeah, that's a possibility. It is hard to dig into their numbers because they are private. I saw one number at 12mil for total basketball revenue. But to your point, the school could also just be paying for stuff out of non athletic funds with no intention of having a balanced athletics budget.

If all of that is true, then I'm really feeling like we should just give Justin Gainey his shot. I don't entirely buy the no head-coaching experience arguments. If we end up with a guy that only has head coaching experience at low mid-majors, I don't know if that is really better than Gainey's combined resume.

Also, given the current circumstances, we shouldn't overlook one simple fact. He. Fucking. Wants. The. Job.

There are like a billion examples of hugely successful mid-major coaches sucking at high major jobs. Hiring a head coach is far from a sure thing.

In the current landscape I’d rather have a 1 million dollar coach and 10 mil player budget than a 3 million dollar coach and a 8 million player budget. The difference between those 2 coaches won’t beat out having another 2 million to spend on a player.

After all this it’s going to be hard to close the roster cost gap while also overpaying. Gainey wants it, will be affordable (relatively speaking) and use that extra cash to let him build. Then if he has success it will be easier in future to justify paying him while keeping roster budget as high as possible.

We need to change the mindset. It’s like the nfl if you can’t get one of the top 3 qb in the league, don’t spend a fortune on a 8-12 QB. Go cheap on a rookie deal or a retread guy and put pieces around them. Same with college sports, if you can’t hire a top 5 coach in the country just go cheap and throw all the money at the players.

When Lowe was hired in 2006, he had played for State more recently than Gainey has now. That makes me feel old.
