^But it's much worse than that with Republicans. Republicans hate the *idea* of public schools.

^ can you expand on that. What about mass indoctrination do you think a Republican would oppose?

^Can i expand on it?Not in a way that your bias would allow you to understand.

Do you think these imaginary republicans would oppose 19801975 style public school indoctrination that most of us had growing up?Edit: Reagan did run on abolishing Dept of Education Carter had just started in his term. There were objections about sex ed and creation vs evolution. Apparently Milton Friedman suggested something like vouchers in the 1950s that Reagan suggested but only recently got implemented. The 1980s argument was on the performance not meeting the standard (which people still make today). All that to say, if schools were more flag waving, performed better and had less gender ideology they wouldn't get the hate from the right (and I will say that is probably less prevalent and more fake and gay as an issue I'd suspect in 99% of cases). The richer, college educated mid six figure moms send their kids to private school whether they are left or right. As a parent I occasionally encounter other parents and the conservative ones seem to focus on worrying about what is taught not the institution itself. Left and right don't want their kid stabbed and that takes the primary focus.[Edited on September 2, 2026 at 1:46 PM. Reason : a]

^ the ones that do are in rich school districts that don't really mirror the experience of the average person. In essence they are paying private school tuition by function of property taxes and mortgage, which your quote above highlights. A weaker claim than what I said above. - Rich parents across political divides send kids to private school or buy a $1m+ home so they don't have to deal with public school issues.- Republicans, meaning the average middle ones, would not have a problem with public school as an institution if it was 1950s America and outcomes were good. They DO generally, and the evidence shows its historic, have a problem with federal school/Dept of Education.

^So, in other words.....the truth is not what you claimed.GotchaSo....do you propose we provide public school education for the wealthy, but withhold it from the poor? I'm not sure what point you are trying to make. I mean you first said *everyone* hates public schools; your position has been *considerably* amended since then, to the point that it resembles "everyone hates public schools" in no manner whatsoever. How many amendments to that statement must we make before it is at least partially correct, and once we have done that, what was the point?

It was really to address a couple of things:If you imagine public school was Jesus land the republicans you are probably discussing would not oppose it. So nothing about it as institution is objectionable. I was implying it's something about what is taught and also the performance that people find objectionable and I was trying to get specific. Then I gave examples that are kind of exemplified by Ken Robinson that is fashionable in elite circles that education as an idea is broken. The main arguments there are around public school being setup for a world with factories and we do not live in that world today. Older example: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deschooling_SocietyGets at the idea. What is education for? You can look at what it was setup for originally and see if the assumptions made are still relevant. It's a very colorful space with tons of nuance. I was just trying to suss out why you think school is important, what the goals are. There are of course republicans that want to destroy it because they see it as gay race communism but there are lots of other pockets of opposition both to what is taught and why it exists at all and they cross formal political boundaries. I knew a liberal hippy family that created an outdoors school that teaches living off the land. Some people in our social group now created a home school pod thing for religious reasons. The anecdote about my old neighbor that's as woke as they come sending her kids private was just color to the hypocrisy. There are real problems in some schools and if you don't have to you won't deal with them.

I think we've been talking about two different aspects of public education, then. When I said Republican hate the *idea* of education, that's exactly what I meant--Independent of the structure of that education. I may be speaking somewhat hyperbolically, but with the modern Republican party...not by much, in my opinion. We've already seen Republican attacking science (in multiple ways), for example. I think the only way current Republicans would truly endorse public education would be if they had significant control over the content of that education...to the detriment of education. Science would be one part that would suffer, in particular.I don't think MAGA Republicans would support public education unless they somehow were to gain from it politically. We've all heard them complain, as you did, that public schools are indoctrination centers, but.....if they had full control, that is EXACTLY what MAGA Republicans would turn them into.
