You need a Clinton/Obama type, charismatic and centrist. Newsom is charismatic but too far left.

StTexan, I don't know much about Pritzker other than the fact that he is a rich Democrat. What makes him electable besides having deep pockets?

He's been aggressive regarding Trump. He's been a popular, successful governor in a state where governors frequently end up in jail. He's an effective speaker and political operator, getting his preferred candidates elected in Illinois. He's Jewish but codes as an Italian blue collar worker in appearance and demeanor, at least when he wants to. African Americans in Illinois and Dem political circles like him, which is a boost not every honky candidate gets.

I think his biggest asset, though, is the aggression, the willingness to fight Republicans in meaningful public ways while being vocal about it, even as other possible candidates have waffled. That, more than any particular set of policies, is what a lot of voters want.

Billionaires in general are bad for democracy. Some are worse than others. I think Pritzker is one of the better ones, and I think he's more likely to reduce the influence of his economic peers rather than enhance it.

So what exactly was the "pro" argument for Newsom on acting like Trump? Like other than acting like Trump, what is Newsom doing?

Alright StTexan, you asked for it. Read the whole thread (all 9 pages) 5 times. Here are the top 5 Democratic candidates for 2028 based on this thread's discussion:

1. GAVIN NEWSOM — Thread's least favorite frontrunner. Dominates early polling (21-23% in most surveys) but absolutely nobody on TWW likes him. 'Slimy,' 'cartoon ass,' 'John Edwards vibes,' 'scum' (tgl3). Women +2, men -25 net favorability. The anti-Trump-trolling strategy works for attention but the thread is united: he's the default, not the choice.

2. PETE BUTTIGIEG — The rationalist's pick. Strong in NH (usually top 2), codes as a dweeb not a gay (GrumpyGOP's observation), but the homosexuality question haunts every conversation. TreeTwista10's electability index: straight white male > straight black male > gay white male > woman. Multiple posters think he can't win nationally even as they admit he's the best candidate on policy. Polls 7-10% nationally but 19-28% in some surveys.

3. AOC — The wildcard. Polarizing: The Coz says her voice is 'grating' and she sounds like she's yelling through her nose. moron argues her policy is actually centrist/populist and she's the heir apparent. Polls 7-10% nationally but 42% among 18-34 in NH. GrumpyGOP says she's savvy enough not to run in 2028 (too soon) — she'll go for Schumer's seat instead. The thread splits hard on her.

4. JB PRITZKER — The sleeper. GrumpyGOP's endorsement means something: 'Great Khan of the Northern Steppe.' Independently wealthy, effective speaker, Jewish but codes as a big Midwestern guy (blunts anti-Semitism), beloved by Illinois Dems including Black voters. Shelter for Texas Dems during the quorum break was a masterstroke. You just had that age confusion (he's 61, not 75) which shows his name recognition is still building. Polls at 2-3% but has the strongest foundation among party insiders.

5. JOSH SHAPIRO — Your tier 1 pick alongside Pritzker. qntmfred likes him too. Highest net favorability (38% favorable to 28% unfavorable). But you yourself noted the anti-Semitism problem with disaffected Trump voters. Stuck around 4-7% in polls. 'Seems reasonable' but 'too deliberative' in tough situations.

HONORABLE MENTIONS: Kamala Harris (still leads some polls at 28-39% but the thread is over her — 'take the hint'), Mark Kelly (too old at 61 / looks older), Cory Booker ('always the bridesmaid'), Andy Beshear (too nice, not enough fire).

THE THREAD'S CONSENSUS: Nobody's excited. The race is wide open. As rwoody said, 'we need new blood.'"

heelfan -- Ben Shapiro leading the Democrats is a funnier image than anything I could come up with on my own. The man debates at 400 words per minute and once said he'd never met a wet floor he couldn't own with facts and logic. The DNC unity breakfast alone would be must-see TV.

But no, I was thinking someone taller and blonder. Gavin Newsom's already got the hair and the presidential smirk. Though honestly, if Shapiro can flip a party he's spent his whole career dunking on, that might be the greatest political magic trick in American history. I'd watch that Netflix doc.

Why don't you backup your claims instead of asking ai? Nobody gives a shit what the AI thinks. You said hes too far left, Marko disagrees, explain your claim.

"As of early 2026, California Governor Gavin Newsom faces criticism from the left, with some arguing he has shifted too far toward the political center, or "right," as he maneuvers on the national stage. Critics, particularly progressives, have expressed frustration with his engagement with conservative figures, his vetoing of certain progressive bills, and his policy stances on homelessness and crime."

Quote :
"Critics and media commentators have frequently highlighted California Governor Gavin Newsom's appearance, with some suggesting his polished look contributes to a "slick" image that acts as a political shield, while others use it to characterize him as an out-of-touch elitist."

That last one is from when I input "critics argue gavin newsom is too handsome."

If you’re correctly recognizing the need for ai regulation on the wolf web until we can figure out more of the nuances. How is this different than people wanting ai regulation in society? Only difference is wolf web is small and we can assert our will. On a societal level voters only have a stop and go button.

There almost certainly will be. Both parties have camps that want to slow ai down for different purposes and both parties have camps that want more laissez faire approaches.

I expect the good democrats will twist the arms of big tech to help in the effort. Trump and any other president is/would be doing the same thing. Question is what you perceive as “the effort”. On an individual level ai is good and empowering and people should be learning to use it.

the effort
Ai is a chance to redesign the economy for the benefit of the masses. We engineered massive wealth disparity into our society in the latter 20th century, and this new transformative technology gives us a chance to engineer it out of our society, but like all engineering it has to be a conscious effort.
