i like it cooler when trying to sleep, so around 72 at nighttime. if we're home during the daytime, then around 76-77 is usually fine.

Like 16 hrs 76 plus 8 hrs 74 is 75.333333333. Versus just leaving it at 75 all day

I had heard in the winter its better to leave it at say 68 and maintain that than to turn off and start warming up dwelling from say 64 etc, which kind of sounds like what rjrumple is saying

we use to run it at 73 but recently came home to AC that had gone out
after fixing it, we took the opportunity to reset our internal thermostats

we just run fans in rooms to make it more comfortable

For me anything above like 76 is saving money and just learning to be comfortable at that temp. It used to have to be like 68 for me when i was smoking, prob due to blood pressure/heart rate being higher, and being outside to smoke in 100F texas heat. Plus i had a better electric plan...now i'm spending like $122 bucks for 645kw/hr

I am purely trying to save money. Our units are 20+ years old, and are being held together with five tape and baling wire. Their age also makes them inefficient. Plus our windows are the same age as the units, so they aren’t efficient either.

I like it cold at night, but as long as it is running while I fall asleep, it doesn’t seem to make much of a difference what the temp is after that, unless for some reason it gets really hot inside.

My highest power bill last year was $137. I usually have two months around $130, one month around $100, and then back down to the $60-70 that it is the rest of the year (I have gas heat). Even if it cut my bill by 25% in the summer, it's just not much savings. Living in a smaller dwelling with decent insulation will save you more than tweaking the thermostat ever will.

Wife and I can skip one meal out and cover the cost of several degrees on the thermostat for a whole month.

1800 sq ft split level with a walkout basement. Built 1964, but updated with good insulation and decent windows. Encapsulated crawlspace. HVAC unit is 6 years old.

Gas bill will be around $200 for 3 months in winter. $50-100 for 4 shoulder months, then like $30 5 warmest months.

Ah ok, so you have gas. That explains a little bit of the difference. My crawlspace is not encapsulated, but I’m getting ready to redo the insulation down there.

In the summer, it's not making that much of a difference.

highly recommend encapsulation. I can work on plumbing and electrical down there without laying in the dirt with snakes and spiders. Never have to worry about mold.
