There’s a map there. Pick a random newspaper and read the oldest edition. It’s interesting to look around the time of the civil war and see how the freed people were thought about at the time. The classifieds and op Ed’s are usually interesting. You can also see how competing newspapers were just their owners way of tweeting, and often times be directed at a competing paper in their town over mundane issues.
