so I don't have a lot of super important stuff, but I guess I should probably get on it when it comes to backing up like family photos and old stuff I don't want to lose

I keep seeing online lately though that you're supposed to replace them every 5 years (maybe less?)

that seems like way too often. plus every drive I have still works, except one of them stopped making an instant connection between the USB and computer (I can still access most of the files with a special program though)

none of it is super important I guess. mostly music, family and phone pics, and lewd anime girls

I'm just wondering if it's even worth the effort really. it's not like I have any progeny who is going to give a shit about any of the family stuff. I'll probably do another back up of family stuff and my kitty (RIP) but just wondering how u guys deal with this?

idk I don't like to upload stuff to the cloud or wherever necessarily. no need to put any more wasteful data online than there already is

Not often enough. I should do it about once a month.

Never. I have random thumb drives and maybe a hard drive or sd card with stuff on it, but never review etc. Clearly not important enough for me

Because I have a huge photo archive I spend a lot of time on this and have for many years now.

My current solution is a pair of NAS's. I have a 4-bay UGREEN NAS that I picked up earlier this year and that is my current primary archive with the drives in a RAID5 array for a 33TB pool. I also have an older Western Digital MyCloud PR2100 2-bay NAS that I've been using for a decade or so now that I won from a Newegg Facebook giveaway. It came with a pair of 2TB drives and I now have a pair of 28TB drives in it in RAID1 configuration. The UGREEN is my local NAS and the MyCloud is my offsite NAS at work. I also have my photos on Amazon Photos, formerly Amazon Drive.

All of my photos are well curated and tagged. I do location tagging, face tagging, have a strong folder and file naming structure, etc. My shit mostly stays very organized, which is needed when my photo archive is north of a million now.
